Birkhill Wood: Balfour Beatty to build the grid substation for three Dogger Bank wind farms
Balfour Beatty has won a contract from National Grid for the first phase of the Birkhill Wood 400 kV substation in East Yorkshire. The substation will link three planned offshore wind farms to the UK grid: Dogger Bank South East, Dogger Bank South West and Dogger Bank D.
The contract covers early design work and enabling works to prepare the site. Enabling works have already started. Main construction is expected to begin in 2027. National Grid got planning consent for the site in June 2026.
Dogger Bank South East and South West are 1.5 GW each, developed by RWE and Masdar. Both have development consent (May 2026) and CfDs from Allocation Round 7. Commissioning is expected in 2031 and 2032, with a final investment decision targeted for 2027.
Dogger Bank D, from SSE Renewables and Equinor, is up to 1.5 GW. It has a seabed lease but still needs development consent and an investment decision.
Balfour Beatty says the whole substation project will employ about 200 people at peak.

| ROLE | WHEN | DEMAND | CERTIFICATES THAT HELP |
|---|---|---|---|
| HV / substation commissioning technician | 2028–2030 (estimate) | MEDIUM | HV authorisation / senior authorised person, GWO BST |
| Electrical installation technician (LV) | 2027–2029 (estimate) | MEDIUM | Electrical qualifications, GWO BST, site safety card |
| Offshore turbine installation technician | From about 2030 (estimate) | LOW | GWO BST, BTT, Sea Survival, OPITO |
Keep HV authorisations current. Substation commissioning work should come before turbine work, and it is worth watching for contractor announcements.
Build your base now with GWO BST and basic electrical skills. Turbine work on these projects is still years away, so no rush.
Dogger Bank has several phases, so long-term service work is likely after 2032. Dogger Bank D is not yet approved, so do not count on it.
