Certifications in the wind industry are not just pieces of paper. They are the official proof that you know how to work safely. In Europe, site managers will check your certificates before you are even allowed to open the tower door.
Here is the breakdown of the most important certificates in the industry today.
1. The Basic Entry Tickets (For Everyone)
🛡️ GWO BST (Basic Safety Training)
This is the absolute baseline. You cannot step onto a wind farm without it. It teaches you basic survival skills and has 4 modules for land turbines (and a 5th module for sea work):
-
Working at Heights: How to use safety ropes, harnesses, and rescue kits.
-
Fire Awareness: How to put out small fires safely inside the turbine.
-
First Aid: How to save a life or treat an injury high up in the tower.
-
Manual Handling: How to lift heavy objects without hurting your back.
-
Sea Survival (Offshore Only): How to jump safely into cold water and move from a boat to a turbine.
-
Note: Safety certificates expire every 24 months. You must take a short "Refresher" course to keep them active.
🔧 GWO BTT (Basic Technical Training)
If you do not have a formal license as a mechanic or electrician, you need this track. It proves you understand the internal systems of a turbine. It covers:
-
Mechanical (BTTM)
-
Electrical (BTTE)
-
Hydraulics (BTTH)
-
Bolt Tightening (BTTB)
2. Advanced Safety (For Experienced Technicians)
As you progress in your career, your team leader or employer will ask you to take advanced GWO safety courses:
-
GWO ART (Advanced Rescue Training): This trains you how to evacuate an unconscious teammate from deep inside the hub, the spinner, or the top of the nacelle.
-
GWO EFA (Enhanced First Aid): Wind turbines are often far away from cities and hospitals. This course teaches you how to keep a badly injured person alive for hours while waiting for a rescue helicopter.
3. Special Licenses for Specific Jobs
If you want to specialize and earn a higher salary, you can choose one of these dedicated paths:
⚡ Electrical Licenses (EU and UK standards)
To touch electrical panels inside a turbine in Europe, you need official authorization:
-
In the EU (e.g., Germany): You need the EuP (Elektrofachkraft für festgelegte Tätigkeiten) certification to work safely on specific electrical systems.
-
In the UK: Look for City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection and Testing).
-
High Voltage (HV) & Cable Jointing: Technicians who know how to connect heavy high-voltage cables between turbines and the substation are in massive demand and earn excellent money.
🧗 Rope Access (IRATA)
Do you want to work on the outside of the turbine? The IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) license teaches you how to climb up and hang on ropes to repair blades or clean the exterior tower.
-
Level 1 is the entry point.
-
Level 3 allows you to be the safety supervisor on site.
🏗️ Crane and Lifting Certifications
Turbine parts are heavy. To guide crane loads safely, you need:
-
GWO SLS (Slinger Signaller): The standard qualification to hook up loads safely.
-
OPITO Banksman Rigger: A highly respected certification used across the offshore oil, gas, and wind sectors.
🚁 BOSIET / HUET (For Offshore Travel)
If you work out at sea, you will often travel by helicopter. HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) teaches you exactly how to escape a helicopter if it crashes into the ocean. You cannot board a helicopter without it.
💡 Pro-Tip for Windspellers
Never let a critical certificate expire! If your GWO BST expires on a Tuesday, you are legally not allowed to climb a turbine on Wednesday. Keep a digital folder on your phone with all your certificate dates and book your refresher courses 3 months in advance.
